Venous insufficiency
Definition
Venous insufficiency is one of the most common diseases in developed countries.
It's a bad venous return blood causing: heavy legs, swelling, pain, varicose veins, cramps, itching (pruritus) or even ulcers.
Large, tortuous and swollen veins more commonly known as
"Varicose veins" are the most typical and common symptom of venous insufficiency. They typically cause heaviness at the end of the day, especially during the summer.
They can also appear in the form of small venules (or telangiectasias, reticular veins) which are not symptomatic but unsightly.
We must differentiate between deep venous insufficiency affecting the intramuscular veins and superficial venous insufficiency affecting the subcutaneous veins.
