Peripheral artery disease
Definition
It is about an alteration of the wall of the arteries bringing oxygenated blood to the legs. The arterial lumen becomes smaller and smaller and will gradually become blocked.
The main causes are tobacco, cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes.
At the onset of the disease, no symptoms are felt, then there is discomfort when walking with the onset of cramps, this is called intermittent claudication.
At a more advanced stage, nocturnal pain and wounds or ulcers appear which threaten the functional prognosis of the limb concerned (risk of gangrene and amputation).
